The LinkedIn Headshot: Avoid These Common (and Humorous) Mistakes!

Is this you?

Ah, LinkedIn—the land of professional networking, where your profile photo is often your first impression. But let’s be honest, some of the headshots we see out there are… well, a little less LinkedIn headshot and a lot more bad driver’s license.

So, let’s break down why it’s important to nail your LinkedIn profile picture, while having a little fun pointing out what not to do.

The “I’m Clearly at a Wedding” Photo
You know the one. You’re in a tux or gown, smiling with a glass of champagne. It’s not exactly the professional vibe you’re aiming for unless your career involves crashing weddings. Your LinkedIn profile should say “I’m here to close deals,” not “I’m here for the open bar.”

The “I'm Hiding in the Shadows” Look
Why so serious? If your face is half-cast in shadow like you’re auditioning for a Batman movie, it's time for a redo. Lighting is crucial! Your LinkedIn headshot should be bright, clear, and not have you looking like you're plotting something sinister in the back of a dark alley.

The "Crop Fail" Disaster
Maybe it was a great group shot, but cropping out your friend’s arm (or worse, half their face) isn’t fooling anyone. Nothing says “I’m good at making executive decisions” like a photo where your coworker’s elbow is awkwardly photobombing the frame.

The Blurry Mess
We get it, not everyone is a photographer, but if your photo looks like it was taken on a potato, it’s time for an upgrade. A blurry photo doesn’t just look bad—it can send the message that you’re not paying attention to details. And attention to detail is kind of a big deal in any job, right?

The “Selfie Enthusiast”
Listen, we all love a good selfie, but LinkedIn isn’t Instagram. Those duck lips and quirky angles might work for your weekend posts, but for your LinkedIn headshot, aim for something more polished and professional. You want to be remembered for your skills, not for mastering the art of the bathroom mirror shot.

The “Yucky Yellow Light” Glow
Ah yes, the infamous indoor lighting that gives you a lovely, jaundiced glow. Nothing says “hire me” like looking like you’ve been trapped under fluorescent lights for a week. Whether it’s that harsh, yellow kitchen lighting or an overhead office bulb that makes you resemble a dehydrated plant, it’s time to step away. Natural lighting (or a professional setup) will do wonders for making your skin tone look alive and not like you’ve just been cast as a background extra in a zombie movie.

The "That Was Me 10 Years Ago" Headshot
We get it—your college photo was peak you, but if your LinkedIn headshot is from a different era (or century!), it's time for an update. If your photo screams, "This was me at the height of my *Justin Timberlake* phase," it's probably no longer representative. You want people to recognize you at your next networking event, not wonder if you brought your older sibling to stand in for you. Age your headshot gracefully—just like you’ve been doing!

What do you want to say?

A great headshot can say, “Hey, I’m professional, approachable, and ready to network!” But a bad one? That might say, “I took this in the parking lot of a gas station at midnight.”

Get that headshot right!

Now that we’ve had some fun, let’s talk about why this actually matters. Your headshot is part of your professional brand. It’s how you present yourself to potential employers, clients, and collaborators. A polished, professional headshot can convey confidence, reliability, and approachability—all key qualities in the workplace.

A great headshot is also memorable. You want people to think, “Oh, I remember that person! They seemed like someone I’d want to work with,” not “Wait, is that their dog in the photo?”

If your current photo falls into one of the above categories, don’t panic—it’s an easy fix! Book a session with me for a professional headshot. You don’t need to be in a suit and tie (unless that’s your industry norm), but aim for something that reflects you. I'll take care of the photo.

Need some inspiration? Check out this website or search Pinterest for some fresh ideas! Treat your LinkedIn profile the same way: give it the respect it deserves, and let your headshot be the cherry on top of your impressive resume.

Now, go ahead and upgrade that headshot—you’re one good photo away from nailing your next opportunity!
