Our Project 10: February

February 10th, 2012

It is that time again…when I and 9 other photographer from around the world document one day of our lives during the month taking roughly 10 pictures throughout the day and post them on the 10th. I chose to document a “typical” day in January. January has been CRAZY busy. I am training for a triathlon with Team in Training which has a fundraising commitment. In order to raise the money, I have been teaching photography classes. In January, I taught them on Saturday afternoon, which meant I left for my weekly brick (bike then run) at about 7:30 a.m., got home around noon, showered, and class started at 2 p.m. We’d usually wrap up about 4-4:30. In this particular day, I decided to have a mommy/daughter night out of shopping and dinner. Not a bad way to end a very hectic day!!

When you are done, don’t forget to check out Kirsty Larmour from Abu Dhabi (how cool is that??) and see how she spent her day…

Our Project 10: Christmas Edition

January 10th, 2012

It is the that time again…when I and 9 other photographers from around the world document a day in our life. We take 10 (or so) pictures throughout the day (in the case of my last 2 posts I’ve taken them over an evening/beginning of next day) and post them on the 10th. I am excited to share our Christmas with you. Normally, Christmas is a bit bigger. Tim and I both come from big families with tons of Aunts and Uncles and cousins and we usually celebrate in Ohio with the larger extended family but this year, we decided to keep the car in the garage and celebrate at home. As it turns out, my parents didn’t have any kids to celebrate with this year so they were able to come down and join us which was really nice. We had a nice dinner, went to church (their should be a beautiful candlelit service picture in here but Tim was HORRIFIED when I whipped out the camera phone to capture it and I had to put it away…but I am telling you it was beautiful!) and the girls got up at 6 a.m. to open presents. We spent the afternoon (and I am talking 5 straight hours) playing Dominoes and playing Christmas music. I’ll be honest, we haven’t turned on Christmas music since… I hope you had a Merry one and wish you a wonderful 2012!!

Our Project 10: IU Edition

December 10th, 2011

I can hardly believe it is time for our 10 on 10 project again! One a month, we document a day (in this case 2) with 10 (ish) pictures, and post on the 10th. I knew exactly what I was going to document this time even though the skies were gray. We took a roadtrip to Indy for Thanksgiving and on the way we stopped to visit my alma mater…Indiana University! It was the girl’s first trip to IU and my first trip back in almost 10 years which I find hard to believe. We had a great time showing them around, visiting our favorite places, and eating our favorite food. We didn’t get a chance to go in the Chi O house because everyone was home for Thanksgiving. That was disappointing but oh well :) We also got to check out the fabulous new swim facility that was built after I graduated. I keep hoping the girls would want to go to swim camp there someday!

Next check out the fabulous Jobrina Hofleit of Jobrina Holfleit Photography to see what she’s been up to this month.

Our Project 10: Auburn Edition

November 10th, 2011

If you’ve been following us, you know that for the past 3 months I have been participating in a Project 10 with 9 other wonderful photographers from around the world. Each month we document a day in the lives of our family. I am seeing a recurring theme in my posts and that is swimming. This month, I documented a day in the life of a swim meet that was on the road. This month we traveled to Auburn, Alabama. Since it is only a few hours away, many, many kids from our neighborhood were able to participate so it was fun not only for the kids but for the moms and dads as well. The guys got to go golfing and the girls got a night out. The kids had a great time terrorizing the hotel and trying to find their coach’s room. They were not successful!

Shooting for a Cure: Class Information and Photo Sessions

November 3rd, 2011

Well, it is official! I am 9 days away from starting my 2nd season with Team in Training! This time around I will be a mentor for the newbies on the team. Somehow, I think I’ll be more of a fundraising and you can do this kind of mentor than an “athletic” mentor. We’ll see. Either way, I am looking forward to it. We will be training for the St. Anthony’s Triathlon in St. Petersburg, Florida which will take place on 4/29/12. I am excited because there is a kids tri the day before so we can make a family event out of it.

Once again, I will be raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This season, I am raising money in honor of Grayson, a little boy who turns 6 this month. I met him through my wonderful network of photographers. His family helped out at the Face2Face workshop that I attended in Dallas last March. A blog has been started for him to document his journey. It is When Skies are Gray. I encourage you to check it out and leave some love for this little cutie pie and his family. I know that the money I raise is helping families like his and has truly made a difference in the survivial rates for children with cancer in the past 20 years.

I would like to take my passion for photography and merge it with my desire to raise money for great causes. This is where Shooting for a Cure came about. You can read a little bit more about it in my previous post, located here. To do that, I am going to be teaching another beginner photography class as well as taking pictures for the holidays in exchange for a fully tax-deductible donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Shooting for a Cure

October 28th, 2011

I have been wanting to write this blog post for some time. I am very excited to share the work of my students from my first beginner photography class! The idea came about when my friend Anita mentioned that there were so many photography classes but she really wanted something in person. She said that she learned better when someone explained it to her. So I thought long and hard about it. I’ve taken many classes over the years and felt like I had enough knowledge to teach people how to use their cameras. How many times have I heard “I bought this fancy camera and I have no idea how to use it?” or “I bought this fancy camera and my pictures don’t look any different?” So then it became, do I do this for free (no!) or do I charge (that’s kind of weird to charge your friends!)? At the time, I was raising money for Team in Training which benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I decided that I would do it but I would  require a donation to Team in Training. I got great feedback for this idea and thus the class began. We did a 4 week in-person class that covered all of the camera settings, creative use of aperture, shutter speed, and touched on full manual. We finished our class with a field trip down to this really cool community south of Atlanta called Serenbe for a photo field trip to put our skills to the test. We had a great time. We also had a contest for an Amazon gift card to see who could come up with a name for the class. We had some GREAT ideas but ultimately, we chose “Shooting for a Cure” which my friend Jennifer Parsons came up with. I also gave a “consolation” prize to my friend Mallory for coming up with the whole charity tie in to the name. I felt like the name was generic enough that it could be used for any charity and it was also generic enough that it could be used for classes or photo shoots or any photography related fundraiser. It was perfect! Jeanine Linder who made my Andrea Linn logo, also made the Shooting for a Cure logo. She is so amazingly creative and so nice to work with…I absolutely love her ideas! I am hoping to do another class in the January timeframe (details to come soon) as well as some Fall photo shoots to raise money for the Spring season of Team in Training. I have been blessed with a full time job and I feel like this is a great way to combine my love of photography with my desire to raise money for great causes. I hope that this is something that can be ongoing and can grow in the future.

Now I am happy to feature my student’s great photos from class. I was so proud of them. Everyone eagerly participated, did the assignments, and shared their work. We are looking forward to more field trips in the future where we can continue to practice and grow our skills as well as just have a great time!

In Anita’s words: ” The first one (flower), I chose because I took this picture in manual mode. A month ago, I wouldn’t have been able to choose my own settings. I would have relied on the automatic ones to do it for me. My purpose in taking his class….beyond the fact that it was for a great cause, was to be able to achieve this!  My second one I love because it was such a fun day and we got to use everything we learned leading up to that day. One of the things that I have taken away from this class is that there are “snapshots” and then there are “photographs”….and this one is a photograph, that tells a little bit about what kind of day we were having….FUN!”

Here are some more great images from Jennifer…

And my friend Mallory:

Finally, I wanted to share my favorite photo from our trip to Serenbe. If you want to see the rest, you can check out My Flickr:

Next week I will be sharing more pictures from class, details on my next photography class as well as opportunities to get your family pictures taken for a great cause! Stay tuned…

Our Project 10: Saturday in the Burbs Edition

October 9th, 2011

If you’ve been following us, this is our 3rd month that I’ve partnered with 9 other photographers to document a day in our life. The idea is to take a picture (or so) an hour (or so) and post 10 (ish) pictures that tells the story of our day. I thought I knew what I was going to do this month…I was going to document a day in the life of me working at home. Well, I did and it consisted of me on the computer, and then me on the computer, and ended with me holding a swim team committee meeting? Have I lost you yet? So needless to say, when I grabbed my camera and ran out the door on Saturday, this ended up being a much more interesting day in my life. Hope you enjoy some of the eye candy (you’ll know what I mean ;) .

If you know me, you know that I LOVE the Olympics. I love everything about them. It probably all started in the summer of 1984 when my mom and I were glued to the TV set watching the summer Olympics in LA. Then, right after we moved to Atlanta, I had the opportunity to participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics. That was an unforgettable experience. And in 2008, as was most of the country, I was glued to my set watching the men’s swimming from Beijing. I will never forget watching the men’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay and going crazy when they won! So, that is where I start my Project 10 this month…on the shores of Lake Lanier.

At the last minute, I decided to sign Haylee up for the Eric Shanteau’s Swim for Your Life event which was being held not far from us. I thought it would be fun for her to try out some open water swimming and I had heard that it was a good event last year that raised money for the Livestrong Foundation in honor of Eric’s successful fight against cancer. Rowdy Gaines was the commentator and he was pretty funny. There wasn’t a second that he didn’t have a bull horn or a microphone up to his mouth…even when he changed into his swim gear, he was still sloggin’ that bullhorn around.

The day started with a 1 mile or 5k (3.1 mile!!) swim in the lake. Haylee didn’t do the mile swim but wished that she would have once she got there. We decided we will do it together next year. I won’t be embarrassed because there are so many people that are doing the 5k, it won’t be as obvious when I am the last one out of the lake on the 1 mile. But really, just shoot me if I ever try to do a 5k swim. The fastest swimmers did it in 1 hour and 7 minutes or so, the slowest (that would be about what my pace would be) in 2 hours and 39 minutes. It was pretty impressive…a 14 year old came out of the water just after 2 Olympians and before Katie Hoff. Wow!

Here is Katie finishing the 5k. All I have to say is that swimming does a body good…

After the race, the Olympians were very gracious and let the kids get autographs on their t-shirts or swim caps, and let them take pictures with them. It was a fairly small event so it was easy to get pictures and lots of fun.

This is our friend Jack (quite the up and coming backstroker himself) with Aaron Piersol, one of the best backstrokers of all time. He was super friendly and gracious to all of the kids. He was definitely not just calling it in.

Haylee with Kathleen Hersey.

We ate lunch on the beach and then Eric and the other Olympians made a video to Lance Armstrong to invite him to the event next year. Apparently, he has been doing some open water swimming to stay in shape. I told Haylee that would be a boom for fundraising but we could kiss this “small and intimate” event goodbye. I guess it would be a mixed blessing if he came next year. I hear the event was already about 3x larger than last year.

After the awards ceremony and lunch, the Olympians taught clinics for the kids. What an opportunity! Each stroke was represented by some of the world’s best swimmers in that stroke and the kids split up into groups. Haylee’s weakest stroke is breaststroke. Lucky for her, Eric Shanteau is not only one of the best breaststrokers, he was a pretty darn good teacher. I thought he by far had the best instruction and Haylee walked away and said, “Wow, I am doing everything wrong!” But I also believe she walked away with some things to work on which was great.

Learning about the backstroke from Aaron Piersol. Why are all the girls smiling in this picture (he he, sorry couldn’t resist)?

One last group shot of our Olympians. I believe they said over 25 Olympic medals were represented at this event. Pretty darn cool! I would have died to do something like this when I was a kid (not that I swam…but nonetheless).

Haylee swam the 500 yard open water swim. It wasn’t timed but she did great and I’m quite sure she would be able to do a sprint tri. I am hoping we can do one together once she turns 13.

While this was the end of a wonderful event, it wasn’t the end of this day for me! Haylee and I went and grabbed some yogurt before I went home and napped (taking pictures of people is exhausting!). I had to get my rest because it is Bowling Night. That’s right, the fun never ends in the burbs!!

While Haylee and I were out wishing we were Olympians, Cameron and Daddy hung out and bought Halloween decor since Cameron said our yard was lame. She worked very hard to get it looking scary. I was proud of her for working on it all on her own.

Then it was off to bowling. Since I knew I had to be in a picture, I was hamming it up after each shot. If anything, we cracked ourselves up. Not so sure we’ll crack anyone else up but we had fun!

This is my STRIKE face :)

It is 10:30…I am sunburned and tired but my baby finished her project so I had to make it the last picture of the day (that is kind of how I feel right now!)

Now check out my new friend Robyn Oakenfold from Little Bug Photography to see what she’s been up to…

Our Project 10: Triathlon Edition

September 10th, 2011

This is the second edition of the project I am working on with 9 other photographers…document a day in your life, post 10ish pictures on the 10th of the month. So here is presenting this month’s Project 10…

Triathlon is a gear intensive sport but I am a gadget loving gear junky so I never said I was complaining! Now I have something to spend money on besides photography equipment…uh oh!  I will be doing a .9 mile swim in the Potomac River (LATE BREAKING NEWS: SWIM HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO FLOODING AND STRONG CURRENTS), a 25 mile bike, and a 6.2 Mile run through DC. I am hoping the fantastic views will keep my mind off the pain in my legs!!

Look how I started my day:

I went out to snap pictures of the signs that Lori put in my yard and got this cute picture of Cameron before school (I tried to capture Haylee but she threw a small hissy when I woke her up before the alarm trying to take her picture…I don’t see what the big deal was ;)

Gotta have my Starbuck’s:

At the Atlanta airport…who knew the view from the park n ride could be so cool?

Goodbye Atlanta (snapped this picture right over the guys sleeping next to me…don’t tell!)

Hello DC (I am happy to report the rain has cleared up and it is sunny and yet, I am sitting in the hotel room watching the US Open):

Finally out of the hotel and off to the VIP fundraiser reception…what a view!

Now check out my new friend Nancy of Nancy Lary Studios. You can see how she spent her day HERE.

Flashback Friday: Ground Zero

September 9th, 2011

As we approach the 10th anniversary of 9/11, I thought it was appropriate to look back and remember that day. These pictures were taken some time after the event (June 2002) but you can see that it is not business as usual in New York.

I was working for Microsoft and calling on some of our smaller retailers, one of which was J&R Computer World in Lower Manhattan. The only time I ever saw the twin towers in person was when we went to lunch one day and we stopped and they pointed out the World Trade Center. You could not even see to the top as it was covered by fog. I do remember that it was an impressive site.

I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was pregnant with Cameron and on the phone with my boss and we were sort of talking about it and watching the news and then the tower fell and we just decided to get off the phone. I remember watching Lisa Beamer talking about her husband and how she was pregnant too and I just cried and cried. All those kids who would never meet their dads. It was heart wrenching. Now Cameron is 10 years old and she just keeps asking, “why would someone do that?” There is no good answer to that question is there?

We had the opportunity to walk around ground zero in July when we did our big roadtrip up the east coast. Everything was covered due to the 9/11 Memorial being worked on but we did have a chance to view the memorial that was on the side of the WTC firehouse. The girls thought the names engraved in the sculpture were of the people who died that day…I had to explain that those were just the firefighters that died that day. I think they were stunned by that and very thoughtful. It was a good opportunity for us to talk about it and walk around. The church that you see in these pictures is back to normal. There are no more memorials or posters hanging on its gates, the ash has all been cleaned up…but it would be impossible to forget what happened there 10 years ago.

The firefighter memorial in honor of those who died that day:

And may we never forget…
